AUDIT: Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test
A screening tool used worldwide to identify risky or harmful drinking patterns early — before they become severe dependence.
What this screening looks at
AUDIT is a short, structured clinical questionnaire that looks at three broad areas: how much and how often someone drinks, whether they’re showing early signs of dependence, and whether drinking has already caused harm to health, relationships, or responsibilities.
Consumption
Frequency and quantity of drinking over recent months.
Dependence symptoms
Signs like loss of control, morning drinking, or needing more to feel the same effect.
Harmful use
Injuries, blackouts, or concern expressed by family, friends, or a clinician.
Next steps
Results guide whether brief counselling, outpatient support, or a more intensive care plan is the right fit.
This is a conversation, not a quiz
AUDIT is designed to be interpreted by a trained clinician alongside a real conversation about context — not read as a pass/fail score on a screen. At Safeways, this screening happens during your first outpatient visit, and the result becomes the starting point for your care plan, not a label.
