Alcohol Use Disorder
Conditions · Alcohol Use Disorder
When drinking stops being a choice.
Alcohol dependency is one of the highest-burden conditions we see across Huruma, Korogocho, Kariobangi, and Mathare.
What alcohol use disorder can look like
Loss of control
Drinking more, or for longer, than intended — repeatedly.
Withdrawal symptoms
Shaking, sweating, nausea, or anxiety when not drinking.
Impact on daily life
Missed work, strained relationships, or neglected responsibilities.
Continued use despite harm
Drinking continues even after it’s caused health, legal, or family problems.

Our approach
Treatment starts with a standardised screening (AUDIT) to understand severity, followed by a plan matched to that severity — outpatient counselling and check-ins for early-stage drinking, and medically supervised residential detox for severe dependence, once our residential programme is operational.
